STEM-In-Action Fall Follow Up: River Revivers

Today's STEM-In-Action Fall Follow Up is all about team River Revivers. As a reminder, the U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) awards STEM-In-Action Grants of up to $5,000 to eCYBERMISSION National Finalist or Regional Winning teams that wish to further develop and implement their projects in their communities. Let's see how the People's Choice Award winning team is doing!

Hello! We are the River Revivers from Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina. We are a team of three 7th graders. Our team of four has since gone to a team of three.

Team River Revivers

Our eCYBERMISSION days started back in September of last year, when Rishi and Milan decided to ask Mazie and Ramya if they wanted to join the team. The original motive behind our joining of eCYBERMISSION was to gain experience in engineering and science that can be applied in real life, as well as help out our community. Since the four of us live in Charlotte near the Catawba River, we chose the problem of bacterial pollution. With this, we followed the engineering design process; Ideation, design, prototyping, redesign, testing and approval to help us get the job done. Our final product was a wooden boat prototype, with propellers, and an LED UV light.

With the STEM-In-Action grant, we plan to build a bigger and better model with built-in sensors for collision detection, four 260 nanometer UV lights, a GPS for self-navigation, and a strong motor to fight against possible currents of the Catawba River. We hope to create this Surface Utility Vehicle and reach out to the Catawba Riverkeepers (an NPO in our region) to see if the solution would work! Thank you for reading our blog post, and eCYBERMISSION was a really great opportunity!
