A G.L.I.M.P.S.E. Into Amputees' Futures

Three Muskateeretts Take on Virtual Reality & Gesture Control Tech

Our project G.L.I.M.P.S.E (Gesture Control Logic In Minimizing Phantom Sensations Effectively) is a cost-effective solution to Phantom Limb Sensation (PLS) in amputees through the use of Virtual Reality and Gesture Control technology.

Diversity Luncheon with Oregon Secretary of State; Dennis Richardson

After receiving the eCYBERMISSION STEM-In-Action Grant, our team continues improve our current solution and share our discoveries with our community. We have tested out various virtual reality systems to find one that will work best for amputees. Additionally, we have implemented a new feature to G.L.I.M.P.S.E which allows an amputee to view a virtual reality environment in a 360 degrees view. This will enable amputees to feel more engaged in the experience and will help lessen the phantom limb sensations they may be experiencing.

We plan on further developing G.L.I.M.P.S.E so that all different types of amputees can use it. To accomplish this, we will need to experiment with reconfiguring the Myo Gesture Control Armband that we are currently using.

Over the past few months, we’ve had so much fun sharing G.L.I.M.P.S.E with our community. We were honored to be invited to the Diversity in Business Luncheon, where we received an honorable mention for our work from Oregon’s Secretary of State Dennis Richardson. Being guests on the TV program In-Light-n-Mint was one of the most exciting experiences of our lives, and we’re happy that we were able to share our project with more people through the program.

Another highlight of the season was seeing Overleaf post a blog post about our team, project, and how we used their software to document our progress. Our team was also able to present to science teachers from all around Oregon at the 2017 Oregon Science Teachers Association Conference. We were given a chance to speak at the Opening Ceremony, as well as host a session for teachers.

Working on this project has been a lot of fun, but there have been a few obstacles along the way. It was a huge challenge transferring G.L.I.M.P.S.E from the Unity application onto the virtual reality application. In fact, it even required the help of Unity PDX experts. However, we are working through the problems as a team and continue to remain optimistic.

We’d like to give a huge thank you to eCYBERMISSION for giving us this incredible opportunity to our ideas into reality!
