Team Columbia Green, A Recycling Machine
SIA Grant Students Spring Into Action
Our project was about spreading awareness about proper
recycling of plastic bottle caps in city of Madison, AL for the first time. The
recycling company in the city of Madison does not pick up plastic bottle caps
for recycling. Instead, they discard the plastic bottle caps. KW Plastics in
Troy, AL is the only place in AL that recycles plastic bottle caps. Our team,
with our ”Correct Recycling of Plastic Caps” campaign, spread the awareness and
made it possible for entire city of Madison to recycle their plastic caps at
the three fire stations in Madison.
We have devised a process, whereby the plastic caps are collected
in large yellow bins located in fire stations. Then once the bins are full,
with the grant money that was provided, they are picked up by the volunteers at
fire stations and taken to a warehouse in Huntsville, a neighboring city that
further takes the caps to Troy.
At this point in our project, we are monitoring the progress
based on Fire Chief of the city of Madison’s emails. Our plan, so far, is
working just perfect. We are seeing that more and more citizens are curious
about learning the correct recycling techniques and finally recycling plastic
caps. The yellow bins are filling up faster and faster, so we may provide the
fire stations with two large yellow bins instead of just one.
