Spotlight on the Sixth Grade, Northwest Region, First Place Team; The Rescuers
Team Name: The Rescuers
Region: Northwest
Grade: 6
School: Fern Ridge Middle School
City, State: Veneta, Oregon
Team Advisor: Scottie Barnes
Students: Cooper Barnes, Micah Cornelius, Rebecca Nohrenberg, Tyler Peale
Mission Challenge: National Security and Safety
“The Rescuers” team was recognized by judges for its efforts to improve efficiency of disaster relief in rural and hard-to-reach areas. After observing floods in their rural community and disasters in Haiti and Southeast Asia, the students were concerned that delivering emergency supplies to some places was extremely difficult. To solve this problem, they designed an airdrop system called a “Rescue Pod” that could deliver required supplies within 24 hours of a disaster. The team utilized a local skydiving association to drop the pod and measure how far it landed from its intended target. They also collected data on wind direction, wind speed, altitude, condition on impact, distance from target, and rate of descent. The results of their experiments showed that, when dropped from a low altitude, the “Rescue Pod” had a relatively high speed of descent, a minimal distance of drift and was durable enough to survive. The team hopes to one day provide their solution to the U.S. Army, National Guard, or Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Each student on "The Rescuers" has won $3,000.00 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds, a certificate of recognition from the U.S. Army, and an expenses-paid trip to the National Judging and Educational Event in Washington D.C. in June to present their final projects and compete for an additional $5,000.00 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds.
