Spotlight on the Ninth Grade, Northwest Region, First Place Team; Buzz Busters
Team Name: Buzz Busters
Region: Northwest
Grade: 9
School: Learning Without Limits
City, State: Iowa City, Iowa
Team Advisor: Hector Ibarra
Students: Emily Corr, Nathan Juels, Ryan O'Neil, Justin Roth
Mission Challenge: Food, Health and Fitness
Team “Buzz Busters” was recognized by judges for its investigation into the problem of public awareness about the effects of consuming highly caffeinated energy drinks. These drinks are often marketed to adolescents as a safe, healthy means to be more energetic and awake for sports, school, work and driving. The team tested the effects of caffeinated drinks by having a registered nurse test the levels of blood glucose, blood pressure and heart rate in people who used these energy products. The team then conducted three testing sessions to determine the impact energy drinks may have on a task requiring a steady hand. Based on their results, the students would like to educate people in their community on the facts about energy drinks and the lack of a nutritional or physical benefit when energy drinks are consumed.
Each student on "Buzz Busters" has won $3,000.00 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds, a certificate of recognition from the U.S. Army, and an expenses-paid trip to the National Judging and Educational Event in Washington D.C. in June to present their final projects and compete for an additional $5,000.00 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds.
