Spotlight on the Seventh Grade, Southwest/Pacific Regional First Place Team: Sugar Sheriffs

Four seventh grade students from Science Rocks U in Whiteface, Texas, received a regional first-place award in this year’s national eCYBERMISSION competition. With this award, each team member will receive a $3,000 U.S. EE Savings Bond, a certificate of recognition from the U.S. Army and an expenses-paid trip to the National Judging and Educational Event (NJ&EE) in Baltimore, Md., in June to present their final projects.

The “Sugar Sheriffs” team, comprised of students Madison Wilbanks, Michael Funk, Jessica Lawson and Anna Wiebe, and led by Team Advisor Laura Wilbanks, was recognized by judges for its educational, nutritional and exercise plan to prevent and battle diabetes in its community and across the nation.

The team devised surveys for their community and conducted experiments that explored the nature of diabetes and some valuable medicines. The results of their surveys and experiments point towards a need for more diabetes awareness and prevention in their hometown. The team divided the solutions into four action plans: Educational Initiatives, Health Initiatives, Political Initiatives and Research Initiatives.
