Four sixth graders from
Saint Dominic School in
Brick, N.J., received a regional first-place award in this year’s national
eCYBERMISSION competition. With this award, each team member will receive a $3,000 U.S. EE Savings Bond, a certificate of recognition from the
U.S. Army and an expenses-paid trip to the National Judging and Education Event (NJ&EE) in
Baltimore, Md., in June to present their final project.
The “Shore Storm Stoppers” team, comprised of students Danielle DeFlores, Cathy Goodyear, Shannon MacMahon and Christina Vassalo, and led by Team Advisor Joanne Arnold, was recognized by judges for investigating its ability to educate and prepare its community to respond during natural disasters occurring in their area.
The students found that they could raise the awareness of individuals in their local community by providing educational information about how to prepare for natural disaster and by persuading community members to use emergency safety kits. By raising awareness, the local community would be safer and more prepared during the occurrence of any natural disasters.
